Similar to much of Orange County, thousands of Garden Grove, California residents suffer with substance abuse. Of particular concern, Opioids, both synthetic and prescription, are abused by many in Garden Grove. Between 2011 and 2015, 52 residents of Garden Grove visited the hospital due to opioid-related effects, 11 of whom lost their lives as a result.

Youth alcohol abuse is a major concern for many living in the Garden Grove community. Underage drinking is very common in the area. 72% of Garden Grove youth see alcohol as something that is easy to get. 54% of 12 to 20-year-olds in Garden Grove have drank alcohol at least once in their life, and at least 27% drink regularly. 16% of Garden Grove adolescents admit to binge drinking.

Teen Alcohol-Related Problems

There are unique challenges with teen alcohol abuse. Teens are still maturing and can be more reckless when under the influence of substances. A report focusing on Garden Grove youth stated 35% of teen drinkers drove a car while drinking. Driving while or tipsy is punishable by jail time, and teens who drive while drinking can endanger their lives and their lives of other drivers.

Teens who drink heavily risk alcohol-related health conditions that can follow them into adulthood. Teens who drink alcohol are more likely to engage in sexually risky behaviors such as unprotected sex. Additionally, they may begin to develop a tolerance, and by adulthood can use it as a crutch to self-medicate. Young women and men who drink alcohol can risk sexual assault if they are around alcohol-fueled environments.

Teen Marijuana Use in Garden Grove

Possibly because of marijuana‘s legal status in California, many teens in Garden Grove experiment with the drug. 8% of Garden Grove 11th graders use marijuana. This is concerning for several However, when teens experiment with the substance, they can have different effects of them when compared to adults.

Teens who smoke marijuana may not have the maturity to use the drug responsibility, and may drive under the influence for example. Studies suggests teens who try marijuana do so due to peer pressure from friends. Equally important is the idea that teens who try marijuana to be cool may also try alcohol. Underaged marijuana users can later develop poor memory and poor decision-making abilities.

Teen girls who smoked weed were 5 times more likely to suffer depression at 21 yeas of age. Teen marijuana use may teach teens to use substance abuse to cope instead of solving problems in a healthy manner. To illustrate, a teen coping with anxiety who doesn’t realize the severity of their condition may turn to marijuana. If they become tolerant, and their anxiety worsens over time, they can become curious about stronger substances.
