Using Tufts Health Plan Effectively

One of the biggest questions that those seeking treatment for problematic substance use patterns and/or co-occurring mental conditions face is that of how to pay for treatment.

There’s a lot that goes into that equation: by and large, the particulars of the exact coverage offered to each individual can best be viewed by navigating to the Tufts Health Plan website and logging in, or by calling the phone number given on the insurance card.

With that said, below is a brief breakdown of some of the resources that Tufts Health Plan offers for those who might be considering attending either an inpatient or an outpatient rehab. There’s a variety of good information, useful benefits, and specific plans that could come in handy depending on the needs of each individual patient. Additionally, a directory of rehabs can be located here for those looking for treatment centers covered by Tufts Health Plan.

Tufts’ Online Resources For Addiction Treatment

Those struggling to maintain healthy relationships with substances of any kind, both illicit and licit, may find the bevy of resources that Tufts Health Plan offers online to be quite helpful.

It’s also worth noting that those who do use substances as a way to cope with unpleasant thoughts and emotions (perhaps because other coping strategies have not been apparent) are not alone; according to data cited on Tufts’ own website, over 33% of adults in America “are addicted to drugs of some kind.”

Free resources (available on the same website) can be accessed by both members and non-members.

These include criteria on how to assess the severity of an alcohol problem, information on the right way to provide help or treatment to someone who may have a substance use disorder, guides that may be helpful to particular groups (like expecting mothers or teenagers, for instance) in navigating the circumstances of the intersection between addiction and demographics, and phone numbers for support groups for those looking for more psychosocial support.

Perks Associated With Tufts Health Plan

Part of recovering from alcohol or substance misuse, as well as optimizing mental health, is prioritizing physical health, nutrition, and relaxation. Some of the perks offered by Tufts Health Plan at time of writing that may help with the above could include but are not limited to:

  • Possible discounts at gyms and wellness spas.
  • Tools (like suggested diets and tracking apps) to help maintain a healthy BMI.
  • Deals on holistic modalities like meditation classes, massage, and traditional Eastern medicine.
  • A savings card that may be used at a particular local pharmacy.

For those attempting to employ a wide variety of strategies to combat addiction, the above perks may be helpful. Mitigating maladaptive behaviors and belief patterns often necessitates a multi-pronged approach. Different Types Of Plans

As with the vast majority of insurance providers, Tufts Health Plan offers coverage plans of the kinds below. At time of writing, the coverage options under the Tufts Health Plan umbrella include but are not limited to:

  • HMO. Primary Care Physicians (PCP) are required for health maintenance organization (HMO) plans. According to the Tufts Health Plan website, “An HMO requires some cost-sharing on your part, mainly in the form of a copay.”
  • PPO. A preferred provider organization (PPO) plan, unlike HMO plans, does not require a PCP — this allows for a much greater variety of options as far as providers are concerned.
  • Tiered Plans. Tiered plans are a unique option; again quoting from the Tufts Health Plan website, they enable one to “access our full provider network – and the opportunity to lower your costs. A tiered network groups providers into ‘tiers’ based on the value of care they provide, encompassing both cost and quality.”

Figuring Out Your Next Move

If you have more questions about insurance, how to pay for treatment, or what kind of financing or payment plan options may or may not be available at a local rehabilitation center, there’s something you can do — for free — to gain more information.

You can contact a treatment provider now to get questions about rehab and paying for rehab answered. Any condition that is causing significant disruption and/or unpleasantness in your life should not and does not have to be exacerbated by financial concerns; many who seek treatment are concerned about how they are going to pay for it, which means rehabs have a strong incentive to make treatment as affordable (and effective) as possible.
