Drug and Alcohol Addiction in Guam

Guam Is Plagued By Serious Addiction IssuesGuam, the biggest of the Mariana Islands, is full of beautiful and lush landscapes, with warm waters and sands that beckon tourists. However, drugs like marijuana, cocaine, and heroin are used in abundance. Methamphetamine and marijuana use, use are increasing. MDMA (Ecstasy) use is increasing as well, along with inhalants. Guam’s younger inhabitants are the primary users of inhalants like gasoline, glue, fabric protector, cooking spray, and butane.

The US Department of Justice National Drug Intelligence Center notes that smugglers import drugs through the Guam International Air Terminal in baggage, then transport them through delivery services. The use of drugs and alcohol on Guam is often blamed for the high levels of violent crimes, property damage, fatal and non-fatal overdoses, felonies, and drug busts on the island.

    Guam and Methamphetamine Abuse

Drugs Like Marijuana And Meth Are Serious Problems On GuamMeth is the most widely abused illicit substance in Guam and is most often delivered by mail. Available in crystal or powder form, much of the Meth found on Guam comes from China, South Korea, and the Philippines. It is often smuggled into airports on Guam and then removed from passenger baggage and cargo. According to statistics, 30% of individuals who were treated for drugs in Guam were primarily treated for meth/crystal meth.

Crystal meth is a highly abused substance in Guam, with high purity batches that are easy to access. In recent years, $140 million in drugs were seized, much of this being crystal meth. Armed robbery increases have been linked to crystal meth, as dealers opt to receive valuable items in place of money to distribute drugs. Sadly, high school students are experimenting with this dangerous substance at higher rates than the national average.

    Prescription Drug Abuse in Guam

Prescription drugs like Ritalin, Klonopin, and Valium, are increasingly abused, though less frequently than marijuana and meth. Over 3,200 Ritalin pills were confiscated by Guamanian police in recent years. In Guam, they are sold for as low as $10 to $15 per pill on the street.

    Marijuana Abuse in Guam

Marijuana is, and continues to be, the most commonly abused drug in Guam. The availability of marijuana and the prevalence of its use by younger people make it a concern for law enforcement. In prior years, surveys noted 33% of children in 7th through 12th grade have tried marijuana. In 2015, 49% of high schoolers used marijuana. Marijuana drug-related busts have increased in recent years due to imports from Hawaii and the Republic of Palau.
